In what has been an ongoing theme since the origin of the CIF State Cross Country Championship meet, the probable team winner in Division 1 will head south post-meet with their trophy. The Southern Section has taken home a whopping 35 of 36 titles in the division since the meet’s inception in 1987.
The Golden State’s largest section holds down nine of the top 10 teams in the latest CIF State rankings, including the top eight spots.
Irvine Beckman won the Southern Section team title with 83 points, holding off fifth-ranked Temecula Great Oak (94). Manhattan Beach Mira Costa, Mission Viejo Trabuco Hills, La Crescenta Crescenta Valley, San Clemente and Redondo Beach Redondo Union finished 3rd-7th and advanced to the Clovis festivities as ranked teams as well.
Beckman returns to Woodward Park with confidence, knowing they bested a stellar field to win the 45th ASICS Clovis Invitational team title just a month ago. Their 77:04 team time is the 12th-fastest California squad in history. The Patriots back the Clovis performance with their Team Sweepstakes win at the 76th Mt. SAC Invitational as well.
Dynamos Buchanan, Clovis East and Clovis North finished as the top three at the Central Section meet, also held at the CIF State Meet venue.
Individually Maximo Zavaleta from Riverside Martin Luther King was the Southern Section winner in 15:00.8, holding off Trabuco Hills’ Dylan Jubak and Lancaster standout Issaiah McCorvey.
