2024 Clovis Invitational Boys Preview

10/11/2024

The boys’ Bill Buettner Championship Race at the 2024 Clovis Invitational is shaping up to be a highly competitive and exciting showdown, with powerhouse teams and standout individuals from across the country. Leading the charge is the #5 nationally ranked Crater team from Oregon. The Comets, led by the dynamic duo of Josiah Tostenson and Tayson Kitchen, are the reigning Oregon 5A state champions. Both Kitchen and Tostenson finished 1-2 at last year’s state meet, and Tostenson followed that up with a stellar 8:39.89 for 3200 meters at the Arcadia Invitational. He’s been in sharp form this season, finishing second at the Woodbridge Invitational by a razor-thin margin. Crater will be hard to beat, but they’ll face fierce competition from California’s best.

Menlo School, the top California boys’ team at Woodbridge, will bring a strong squad led by Landon Pretre, who clocked 14:16 at Woodbridge and won the small schools’ race at Clovis last year. Mira Costa, ranked #25 nationally, will also be a team to watch, coming off a win at the Iolani Invitational in Hawaii. Senior Isaac Faynsod leads the way for the Mustangs. Southern Section Division I co-leaders, Martin Luther King, look dangerous after winning the Cool Breeze Invitational, led by junior standout Maximo Zavaleta, who was the top California finisher at Woodbridge in 13:56.

Oaks Christian, featuring seniors Christian Yoder and Cooper McNee, will also be in the hunt, along with Jesuit, a deep and well-coached team that recently won the Nike Portland XC meet. Other strong contenders include Bellarmine College Prep, Matilda Torres led by Benjamin Fernandez and Hunter Hannah, and Buchanan, the local favorites who are currently ranked #2 in the Central Section.

The individual race promises to be equally exciting, with a stacked field of elite talent. Defending state champions Aydon Stefanopoulos (Los Gatos) and Evan Noonan (Dana Hills) will be among the top names to watch. Stefanopoulos, the reigning Division II state champion, has had a fantastic season so far, while Noonan, the Division III state champ and top returner from last year’s Clovis race, is looking to break out in 2024. Both have been in top form, with Noonan ranking #24 nationally and poised for a strong showing.

Broen Holman of Sonora Union, a three-time Clovis Invitational qualifier, is another top contender after a series of impressive performances, including a close race with Zavaleta at Woodbridge. Tesoro’s Griffin Kushen, Clovis North’s Conor Lott, Sacred Heart Cathedral’s Miles Cook, and South Torrance’s Liam Miller will also be battling at the front of the pack.

The all-time course records at Woodward Park are legendary, with Newbury Park’s team time of 73:25 from the 2021 state meet still standing as the benchmark. German Fernandez of Riverbank holds the individual course record with a blistering 14:24 set in 2008, while Leo Young of Newbury Park holds the Invitational record of 14:26 from 2022. Evan Noonan’s 14:35 from last year ranks as the #8 all-time mark, and with the talent in the field, there’s a real chance we could see another historic performance this year.

With deep fields, strong teams, and elite individuals, the 2024 Clovis Invitational is primed to deliver some of the fastest times and most exciting races of the season. Whether it’s in the boys’ championship race or one of the many varsity divisions, expect plenty of personal bests and memorable performances on the iconic Woodward Park course. The 45th annual Clovis Invitational is set to be one for the ages!
