The South Coast Conference (SCC) Championships are being held at Long Beach City College in Long Beach April 22-26. All field event finals took place Thursday, 4/24, with standout performances across the board.
Mackenzie Monson of Cerritos College broke the SCC record and took first place in the women’s hammer throw (52.49m/172-02). On the men’s side, Francisco Arechiga—also from Cerritos—claimed victory in the hammer throw (46.53m/152-08). With that mark, Arechiga secured both the A & B standards required to compete in the Southern California Championships and the Community College State Championships.
Tyler Robinson secured the win in the men’s long jump final (7.04m/23-01.25), also earning both qualifying standards. Mt. SAC dominated the men’s pole vault, sweeping the top five spots—all of whom hit both qualifying marks.
The Decathlon and Heptathlon finals also wrapped up Thursday. Luke Johnson of Cerritos narrowly came out on top in the men’s decathlon (6199 points) over El Camino's Gunner Perez (5989), while Carlota Romay Rega of Mt. SAC (3912 points) edged out her teammate Alessandra Jefferson (3896) in the women’s heptathlon.
Mt. SAC continued to impress, advancing four athletes to the finals in the men’s 110m hurdles. East LA College's Fernando Valenzuela advanced to the finals of the 400m with a fast 47.81, meeting both championship standards. Pasadena City College’s Deniya Fields auto-qualified in the 400 and 800, securing both standards, while teammate Jaylin Morgan auto-qualified in the 200 with the fastest time of the day (25.23).
To close out the day—and the final event Thursday evening—the Mt. SAC women swept the top four spots in the 10,000 meter race, scoring a strong 29 points. The remaining finals will take place on Saturday.
